Anti-tobacco Advertising Campaign

Have you seen the recent anti-tobacco commercials?

I have and can’t help wonder if they are sending the message intended. I believe the average person is fully aware of the effects of smoking and a person on the television whose health is struggling, unable to stop coughing, isn’t going to make them throw the pack (or addiction) away and take a new lease on life. If that were in fact all it took, then it would be easy to turn the alcoholic from alcohol, the shopper from the mall, the gambler from the casino and the overweight from the cake.

These commercials make everyone the victim. Think about the person who is dealing with these types of illnesses with a friend or family member. Do they need a reminder of what’s happening or what’s to come? For the person who has had first hand experience due to the loss of someone, is it fair to have the memories come back to them time and time again? Worst of all is the small child. They have been told that mommy or daddy are going to die from smoking. Isn’t it bad enough that they need to deal with this? But then to take those impressionable little minds and show them what could possibly be their parent’s fate, how frightening must that be! The horrible illnesses that are shown can be cause by many other things as well, second hand smoke, too much stress, unhealthy eating or even genetics.

I think taking another road might be more effective. Why not show that the average pack a day person will spend approximately $2200 a year or more on the addiction. Then show the wonderful things that could purchased with that same money, be it food in the house or a wonderful vacation. Then heavily push the various ways a person could go about quitting.
